What They’re Not Telling You About the Blended Retirement System

2018-03-23

We’re now nearly three months into the open enrollment period for the new Blended Retirement System (BRS), which went into effect for new military members on January 1, 2018. While you have until the end of 2018 decide whether you’ll opt into the BRS or stay with the legacy retirement system, time is of the essence. Each month you wait could mean lost matching funds if you end up going with the BRS. However, making a decision like this one isn’t always easy and should never be rushed.

Although there seems to be a lot of information explaining what the Blended Retirement System is — including AAFMAA articles and webinars — there is a lack of advice and guidance for those looking to make an informed decision on whether they should stay with the legacy retirement system or opt into the BRS. Because the decision is such a uniquely personal one, it can be tough to make any blanket statements on how to approach it.

However, in the video below from Strategic Tidbits, Dr. Lenny Wong, Ph.D. (LTC, USA, Ret.) and Dr. Steve Gerras, Ph.D. (COL, USA, Ret.) of the U.S. Army War College offer their advice for those struggling with this tough retirement decision. They share real-life examples of those who should and those who should not opt into the BRS. So, for those still on the BRS fence, this video is a must-watch.
