Virginia Homestead Tax Relief Amended
As of July 1, 2012: House Bill 922 amends Virginia Code § 58.1-3219.5 Virginia Homestead Property tax relief for veterans rated 100% permanently and totally disabled to include homes in revocable and irrevocable trusts.
A Veteran must have a 100% service connected and permanent and total disability and occupy the property as his or her principal residence. The exemption is retroactive to 1 January 2011. Additionally, the exemption is extended to the surviving spouse, if and only if the permanently and totally disabled veteran’s death occurred on or after 1 January 2011 and documentation can be provided showing this. The spouse must also still occupy the home as his or her principal residence and not be remarried.
How to Apply:
Property tax exemption can be applied for through the local county office of where the property is located. Please contact the local county office for details on applying.
