When you signed up for the military, you were automatically enrolled in Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance (SGLI). SGLI provides you with up to $400,000 in coverage and costs $24 per month paid by payroll deduction unless you choose to opt out.
Over the course of your service, circumstances in your personal life may change, which means your life insurance needs may change as well. It’s important to learn how to update your SGLI with the appropriate beneficiaries and coverage amount to help ensure you’re prepared for whatever comes your way.
How Often Should I Update My SGLI?
Servicemembers must update and certify their SGLI during their in-processing and out-processing, or at least once a year. You should also review and update your SGLI after you experience a major life event, such as a marriage, welcoming a child, divorce, and other life situations that require you to select or change a beneficiary. This can be done easily, the important thing is to do it.
How to Update SGLI Online
In the not-so-distant past, when servicemembers wanted to update their SGLI designations, they had to go down to the personnel office in person during business hours to complete the paper forms. Today, servicemembers can make changes online at their convenience through the SGLI Online Enrollment System (SOES). With SOES, you can change your SGLI coverage amount, restore SGLI coverage, and access your SGLI coverage certificate anytime.
SOES is only available to servicemembers with full-time SGLI coverage, including active duty, and Reserve and Guard members assigned to a unit scheduled to drill at least 12 times a year.
Submitting Changes Through SOES
To update your SGLI information, you’ll need to follow these steps:
- Go to milConnect.
- Sign in with your Common Access Card (CAC) or DS Login.
- Go to the Benefits tab and click “Life Insurance SOES-SGLI Online Enrollment System”. This will take you to a legal disclosure page, and then allow you to access your coverage.
- Check your coverage and beneficiary information and make any needed updates.
Learn More About Your Life Insurance Options
While SGLI is a good starting point for covering life’s unexpected events, at a maximum coverage of $400,000 it is often not sufficient by itself to cover the needs of a modern military family. The good news is it is not the only option. At AAFMAA, we specialize in providing life insurance for active-duty military, Veterans, and their families at competitive rates. Our Life Insurance team will work to understand and meet your family’s unique needs. For example, AAFMAA Level Term I policies offer rates competitive to SGLI that will not only keep your family covered now, but also beyond your time in service.
Additionally, all AAFMAA policies come with our exclusive Survivor Assistance Services, which means that we’ll ensure your survivors receive the military and government benefits they’re entitled to from your service once you’re gone.
