At the end of 2024, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) began transitioning Veterans to a new, streamlined sign-in process for accessing benefits and health care services on VA.gov and the VA mobile app. This change was driven by the growing threat of identity theft and fraud targeting Veterans. By requiring stronger multifactor authentication through Login.gov or ID.me, the VA is protecting sensitive medical and benefit information while also aligning with the latest federal security standards.

Key Dates in the Transition

• January 31, 2025: My HealtheVet usernames and passwords were discontinued.
• September 30, 2025: DS Logon will be discontinued.
• Going forward: Veterans must use Login.gov or ID.me accounts to access VA services online.

Most Veterans have already made the switch, but if you’re still using DS Logon, it’s important to act before September 30 to avoid losing online access to your VA health care and benefits.

1. Visit Creating an account for VA.gov for instructions.
2. Follow the step-by-step guide to set up your Login.gov or ID.me account.
3. Verify your identity (help is available if you run into issues).
4. Use your new account to sign in as you did before.
