How the SGLI Payout for Death Has Changed in 2023

2023-03-10

Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance (SGLI) provides low-cost group term life insurance for active-duty servicemembers. On March 1, 2023 SGLI coverage increased to $500,000 for all active-duty servicemembers, including those who previously declined or reduced their coverage.

This increase is a result of Public Law 117-209 117th Congress Supporting Families of the Fallen Act, which raises the SGLI maximum coverage amount to $500,000 to ensure it reflects the current cost of living. All eligible servicemembers are automatically insured for $500,000 and must take action if they prefer to reduce or opt out of this life insurance coverage.

To reduce your SGLI coverage, or to opt out of it completely, you must use the SGLI Online Enrollment System (SOES) between March 1 and the end of March 2023 to avoid paying premiums for the coverage. Log in to SOES at https://milconnect.dmdc.osd.mil/milconnect/ and select “Manage My SGLI.” If you do opt out of SGLI, your spouse and dependent children will also lose their coverage. Before you terminate your coverage, you should evaluate alternatives that are more affordable and stay with you even after you leave the military.

SGLI coverage ends 120 days after your separation from service. You can convert SGLI to Veterans’ Group Life Insurance (VGLI) within 1 year and 120 days from separation, but is it recommended to shop for the best life insurance protection for your family.

AAFMAA can help you find a life insurance policy that is right for you. Learn more about converting SGLI to VGLI at Veterans’ Group Life Insurance (VGLI) | Veterans Affairs (va.gov).
