How Military Families Can Mitigate Risk From Equifax Breach Of Personal Credit Files, By Anthony Powell, Vice President of Operations, AAFMAA Mortgage Services

2017-09-11

September 11, 2017 – Equifax announced in September of 2017 that approximately 140 million Americans had personal credit files compromised by hackers. AAFMAA Mortgage Services (AMS) Anthony Powell explains what military families can do to mitigate risks of identity theft.

First, military families should seek out information on the credit hacking event. Google the words equifax and credit files and see what articles are available that provide education.

Second, Equifax has provided education and enrollment page. The enrollment process is explained, along with the military family’s rights if the military family enrolls in identity theft protection services (these are now offered free given the size of the hack, but rights to class action litigation later may be limited). Click on the above hyperlink (enrollment) to learn about military family rights now that the vast majority of American’s credit has been compromised.

Third, military families should contact home owners insurance representatives. Why? Because often times identity theft protection is included in a home owners insurance policy. Lastly, there are many identity theft protection services that typically charge $10/month against unlawful credit use.
