Retirees & Veterans

Life Insurance for Veterans

You put your life on the line to protect us. We’re here to help protect your military family.

While on active duty, servicemembers have access to life insurance benefits through Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance (SGLI), a group term life insurance program for servicemembers and their dependents. Upon transitioning out of the military, retirees and veterans can convert their SGLI policy into a VGLI policy—Veterans' Group Life Insurance. However, AAFMAA offers Veteran life insurance options designed to meet your family’s needs.

If you are getting ready to retire and considering options for your life insurance needs, AAFMAA could be the answer. Before you automatically choose VGLI, check us out first. AAFMAA is a Veterans’ insurance company that offers financial solutions designed exclusively for the military community. Our term life insurance products can save you thousands of dollars over VGLI, just give us a call for a free, no-obligation quote to compare.

Veterans' Group Life Insurance (VGLI)

All servicemembers on active duty have access to life insurance benefits through Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance (SGLI). Upon transitioning out of the military, Veterans can purchase Veterans’ Group Life Insurance (VGLI). Both are group term life insurance programs for current and former servicemembers and their dependents, respectively.

While military life insurance does have its benefits, it’s important to understand what VGLI offers so you can compare it to alternative military life insurance options. We’ve compiled a list of frequently asked questions and answers to help you decide if VGLI is the best policy for you, or if it’s time to research other options.

When military personnel transition out of the service, they become eligible for Veterans' Group Life Insurance (VGLI), which provides life insurance coverage up to the amount they had through SGLI.

However, unlike SGLI, VGLI premiums increase significantly every five years, and servicemembers are only able to increase their coverage by $25,000 every five years — up to a maximum of $400,000 — until the age of 60.

No. After leaving the military, you must actively purchase Veterans’ Group Life Insurance (VGLI). You have one year and 120 days after your transition date to apply and qualify.

You can renew your VGLI coverage every five years, and it does not expire if you make your premium payments on time. There are no age or term limits on the coverage.

When you apply within your first 240 days of transition, you are eligible for VGLI without proof of good health, even if you have sustained a traumatic injury or developed other severe health conditions. If you apply for VGLI coverage after 240 days, you must answer health questions and prove you are in good health.

Yes, the VA offers VGLI coverage to Veterans and servicemembers. It’s also available for military spouses and dependent children.

Yes. Service-Disabled Veterans Life Insurance, or S-DVI, covers qualifying servicemembers at a reasonable rate. Learn how to apply for S-DVI online if you have a service-connected disability.

Any coverage purchased during your eligibility period takes effect on the following VGLI anniversary date. Your billing statements won’t show the cost of the additional VGLI coverage until the month it becomes effective.

Remember, if you are billed on a quarterly, semi-annual, or annual basis, you will not see your premium increase until your next bill. Your increased coverage is effective on your VGLI anniversary date.

You can increase your VGLI coverage by $25,000 if you meet the following requirements:

  • You must request additional coverage during your eligibility period, which is 120 days prior to your next five-year VGLI anniversary.
  • Your total amount of coverage cannot exceed the legislated maximum amount of $400,000.
  • You must be under the age of 60.
