SGLI Coverage: Are Spouses Fully Covered in Plan?

2022-12-12

Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance (SGLI) coverage is automatically provided to members of the Armed Forces when they join. And, yes, you can enroll in SGLI coverage for your spouse. However, you must request an additional coverage called Family Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance (FSGLI). Insuring your spouse does add an additional premium to your monthly payment, though adding a dependent child does not.

Here are a few insights into how to apply for and manage your FSGLI benefits as well as how much coverage you’re eligible to receive.

Is My Spouse Eligible for FSGLI?

In order for your spouse to qualify for FSGLI, one of the following must be true about you, the servicemember:

  • You are on active duty and covered by full-time SGLI.
  • You are a member of the National Guard or Ready Reserve covered by full-time SGLI.

Is My Spouse Automatically Covered?

If your spouse is another servicemember, FSGLI spouse coverage is not given automatically, unless you were married on or before January 1, 2013. Member-to-member couples who meet that condition (and didn’t previously decline coverage) did receive FSGLI automatically. The reason this changed was to allow these couples to choose if they wanted to add FSGLI coverage, seeing as both spouses would have already been covered under their own SGLI policies.

Civilian military spouses, however, are automatically insured under FSGLI unless they decline coverage. They may also choose to elect a lower amount of coverage by completing SGLV Form 8286A. Like SGLI, the premium for your spouse’s FSGLI coverage will automatically be deducted from your pay.

How Do I Enroll in FSGLI?

If your spouse is not automatically covered, you may apply for spouse coverage by completing SGLV Form 8286A, which is linked in the previous paragraph.

How Much Does FSGLI Coverage for My Spouse Cost?

The premium for your spouse’s FSGLI coverage will increase as they age. As such, the monthly premium rates are organized by age range. We’ve put together the below chart so you can see what your monthly premium would be for each coverage amount by age range.
